Summary
It’s well-known that living with one’s mother-in-law is basically hell. So marrying a poor merchant with no family should be an easy way to avoid that mess, right? Well, that was Elaen’s plan until she realizes that her husband, Ahen, lied to her, and is actually the son of the empire’s ferocious Grand Wizard, Kanessis Corenea, who she’ll have to live with at her palace! Though intimidated at first, Elaen realizes that Kanessis is nothing like the figures in mother-in-law horror stories, and becomes enamored with her charisma and unexpected kindness. If anything, the problem here is Ahen’s ulterior motives for marrying Elaen, which she only discovered after the fact. But with Kanessis by her side, Elaen is ready to face any and all challenges in her marriage. Perhaps living with her mother-in-law was the best thing to ever happen to her after all!

disgusting, she looks like a 12 year old girl while her husband looks like he is 20

That’s a plot point that relates to something evil done to her by her mother and she does sort of look older in some images. Also, the husband looks younger than when he first appears as he was in disguise.
I mean, 16 years old is a baby, but it was a contract marriage to keep her from getting married to a man that would abuse her and he intentionally made himself scarce to not put her in an uncomfortable position as a teenage girl.

She is 16 but married at 13 this is normal for this era. back then, they married or sold ther daughters when they were 10 or younger. Luckily ml isn’t trash he doesn’t touch her

I don’t disagree with the different time notion, but being married extremely young was generally more of nobles calling dibs than actual marriages, at least in the west.
I can think of a single example where a 13-14 year (years of birth were kinda sketch at the time) old noble girl did end up pregnant and society was straight up aghast about it. Her name was Lady Margaret Beaufort and even her confessor had remarked it was amazing they both survived when she was “of so little a personage.”
And she never had children again, likely because of it. That’s why they really didn’t mess around with youngsters. It was already dangerous to have children and it was a stupid risk to take.
All that said, she was a super cool, powerful lady and when her son became king she was given the right to take legal actions on her own accord “single unmarried person might or may do at any time,” even though she was married meaning no man held anything over her other than the king and her son respected the hell out of her.

I forgot: she also stopped a Margaret Tudor from getting married too young because she knew how screwed up it was!
